How to Choose Your Kitchen Cabinets

Do you have plans for kitchen remodeling this year? Then you likely are also deciding what types of kitchen cabinets to install. Not only do your kitchen cabinets add visual interest to the room (indeed, they are often the first thing people notice), but they’re also pragmatic.  That’s why you need to take your time to pick the right kitchen cabinets for your needs. Here are questions to ask yourself before you begin your renovation project…

What is your kitchen renovation budget?

If you’ve done any comparison shopping for kitchen cabinets, then you’ve already seen that the prices vary widely. You can spend anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the cabinets, whether they’re custom made, and the general construction and materials used.

As such, the first thing you need to do is figure out your overall renovation budget. The second thing you need to do is determine how important kitchen cabinets are to you. For example, some people invest more of their budget into high-end appliances. Others will prefer to invest more into their cabinets. You need to decide what is important to you, and then appropriate the funds accordingly so that you know how much money you have to invest in your kitchen cabinetry.

Will you buy in-stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets?

As the name implies, in-stock cabinets are the premade cabinets that you buy off the shelf. These are standard cabinets which fit into specific-sized spaces, and they assume you have a fairly standard-sized kitchen (e.g., counter heights are the standard 36 inches). These are the least expensive cabinets, but they’re also the least flexible.

Semi-custom cabinets give you more options in terms of sizing and materials used. However, these are considered semi-custom cabinets because you choose your options from a menu of options. As you might expect, these cost more than stock options.

The most flexible option is to purchase custom cabinets. Since these truly are custom, “made to order” cabinets, there are very few if any limitations on the size, design and materials used. Naturally, while this option does ensure you get exactly what you want, it’s also the more costly alternative.

Wall to Wall Cabinets… Or Something Else?

A kitchen remodel used to include traditional wall-to-wall cabinetry – but that’s changing. Today, some homeowners are ditching some of their cabinets in favor of open shelving.  For example, you might install traditional cabinetry below the countertop, while installing open shelving up above the counter top. Not only does this add visual interest to your kitchen, but it can also make prep work and cooking more efficient.

  1. Presenting your home remodeling budget to your contractor is a good early step in the process. Open shelving has some advantages—you don't need to worry about cupboard doors covered with fingerprints. You do, however, need to keep open shelving organized to maintain the clean appearance of your kitchen. congroremodeling.com
